Teaching poorest children to result in pupil premium from 2011

Those in teaching jobs at schools which take on underprivileged children will see their educational establishment receiving a cash incentive for every student who qualifies for this status.

The 'pupil premium' measure is to come in from September 2011 and a consultation period is currently underway to determine the exact details of how the funding will work, reports the Daily Telegraph.

It has now been given a cautious welcome by one representative of professionals in teaching jobs.

Dr Mary Bousted, general secretary of the Association of Teachers and Lecturers, said: "If the pupil premium really provides extra and new money for schools with deprived pupils it should be widely supported."

But she added that "the devil is in the detail", especially in regards to how much additional money will be allocated per child.

Another change to the educational system that the government is planning is offering schools the right to opt out of local authority control and become an academy.

Around 2,000 schools have expressed an interest in doing so, reported BBC News.
