MPs pass academy legislation

Staff in teaching jobs in England are set to see a radical overhaul of the schools system after MPs approved the Academies Bill.

Under the terms of the legislation, schools will be able to opt out of the control of local authorities from as soon as this September.

The bill is now due to receive Royal Assent after the government won the vote on the issue by a majority of 92, reports BBC News.

Education minister Nick Gibb said the consultation period on the plans can run until the funding agreement for the measures is signed in autumn.

"There is plenty of time both before the summer and after the summer for this important consultation to take place," he stated.

Academy schools will be able to set their own curriculums as part of the changes.

Earlier this month, two organisations representing staff in teaching jobs - the National Union of Teachers and the Association of Teachers and Lecturers - called for an independent review into National Curriculum tests, claiming they are not reliable enough.
