150 top schools apply for academy status

The government has received applications from 150 top schools seeking to become academies.

According to the BBC, it is likely that some will convert in time for the start of the new academic year in September.

"[The list] includes about 45 primary schools, more than 20 grammar schools, a boarding school and some federations involving both primary and secondary schools," the news provider noted.

By becoming academies, schools opt out of local authority control, giving them greater power over teacher's pay, their general finances and the subjects they offer.

Dr Mary Bousted, general secretary of the Association of Teachers and Lecturers, said the relatively low number of schools applying to become academies is "rather a damp squib".

"It will be interesting to see if the list of schools applying to become an academy is as accurate, or not, as the notorious Building Schools for the Future list," she added.
