Devon School celebrates 70th anniversary

A school in Devon is celebrating its 70th anniversary this week with a number of special events.

Great Torrington Community School opened its doors in 1939, enrolling 296 students within the first week.

Pupils and teachers celebrated by dressing in historic clothing and taking part in specially-themed lessons, the South Devon Journal reports.

When it opened, the school was led by headmaster Thomas Nancekievill and a team of nine teachers.

"Seven buses and two cars were used to carry students to the school. Today, the school has 50 teachers, 880 students and 80 other staff and 19 buses bring the children to Great Torrington Community School," the publication noted.

An old log compiled by Mr Nancekievill between 1939 and 1940 revealed that two teachers were called up during the war.

In addition, he noted that the school planted potatoes and purchased a number of chickens during their first year of opening.
