Reading each day 'can make a real difference to literacy skills'

Spending a small length of time reading each day can make a dramatic difference to a child's literacy skills, it has been claimed.

Welsh education secretary Leighton Andrews this week launched a new campaign aimed at encouraging parents to spend more time reading with their children.

"Strong basic skills developed from an early age can have a huge impact on a person's life. The ability to read, and read well helps young people as they access the wider curriculum and further down the line when looking for work," he said.

It is crucial that people of all ages enjoy and embrace books, Mr Andrews added.

According to figures published by the English Department of Education, one in five children failed to reach the expected level in this year's maths and English Sats tests.

Commenting on the results, schools minister Nick Gibb said it is important that pupils have a good grasp of the basics before going to secondary school.
