Young people 'must be educated about alternatives to university'

Although university is a good option for many school leavers, people with teaching jobs should also explore the alternatives with their pupils, it has been suggested.

Sarah Clover, business development manager at notgoingtouni.co.uk, said it is important that students are properly informed and are aware of all the options open to them.

People should not be forced down the academic route in a "one-size-fits-all approach", she stated.

"It is vital that parents, teachers, career advisors and other influencers are aware of the fantastic opportunities available outside of university and begin to educate young people so that they are able to make a clear and informed decision about their life after school or college," Ms Clover added.

A report published in March by Ofsted, entitled Moving Through the System ? Information, Advice and Guidance, found that some children are not receiving adequate guidance, leaving them at risk of making poor choices.
