Out of school activities 'can make children better learners'

Doing out of school activities can help children to become more active learners, it has been claimed.

Helen Barnard, policy and research manager at the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, said that research carried out by the charity suggests that they play an important part in children's education, "particularly important for children from low income and disadvantaged backgrounds".

"Out of school activities help children develop confidence in learning, to become 'active learners' and to see learning as a partnership with adults," she commented.

Ms Barnard pointed out that research has also indicated that children who take part in after-school clubs do better in the classroom.

The restricted access that poorer young people have to activities means they have fewer opportunities to develop learning relationships with adults, she added.

Ms Barnard's comments come after a study by Save the Children revealed that almost two-thirds of parents struggle to fund after-school clubs for their sons and daughters.
