Teaching in England 'to help tackle bullying'
September 17 2009
In an effort to help schools stop pupils with special educational needs and other difficulties being bullied, the government has produced a film to be shown in classrooms.
The Make Them Go Away DVD is aimed at children aged seven to 14 and focuses on how verbal and physical abuse can affect people's lives.
Launching the resource, schools minister Vernon Coaker said: "Any form of bullying is damaging and harmful to the victims and can have a lasting impact on their lives.
"Taunting and demonising a young person because of their disability is particularly nasty. That's why we have produced the DVD to raise awareness of the problem with young people and prevent bullying occurring in the first place."
In order to appeal to youngsters, the film also includes a comment from Arsenal football player Cesc Fabregas, who says that having a disability should not stop people from doing what they want.
According to the Safe to Play report released by the government last year, children with special needs are three times more likely to be bullied than their peers.
