Cambridge comes top of education department league table

The University of Cambridge has been rated as the best teacher-training facility in the country.

For the fourth year in a row, Cambridge's Faculty of Education, the oldest education department in the country, has topped a league table which appears in the 2010 edition of the Good Teacher Training Guide.

The table was put together by the Centre for Education and Employment Research at the University of Buckingham, which rated Cambridge highly in all areas assessed.

Significantly, 90 per cent of students at the Cambridge institution achieve a 2:1 or higher, with a similar number going on to secure a position at a school soon after graduation.

"The faculty is delighted with this outcome, which reinforces the quality of its vibrant partnerships with primary and secondary schools throughout the region and confirms the outstanding value of our higher education-centred teacher education and training," commented head of faculty Mike Younger.

Ofsted has also rated the PGCE course at Cambridge as "outstanding".
