Parents 'consider school choice more carefully'

Parents increasingly recognise the importance of sending their children to a school that suits their needs, the Independent Association of Prep School (IAPS) has said.

They are taking time to assess the facilities and teachers and carefully consider their options, the body said.

IAPS figures have revealed that pupil numbers at boys-only prep schools have increased significantly this year as parents realise that such establishments may be a better choice for their sons.

"All parents have always cared passionately about their children but they really pay attention (by asking), 'is this the right school for my child?'," noted IAPS chief executive David Hanson.

Mr Hanson said the rise in popularity of all-boy schools could be due to the fact that they remove the likelihood of boys feeling the need to "play up" and instead allow them to concentrate on studying.

Children's acceptance of the need for testing has also been revealed recently, with youngsters sating they prefer end-of-topic tests to SATs in a study by the Wellcome Trust.
