Government must re-think school building, says Balls
September 30 2010
The government must do a u-turn and reinstate the school building programme, shadow education secretary Ed Balls has said.
Speaking at the Labour Party Conference in Manchester this week, Mr Balls called for education secretary Michael Gove to re-think his abolition of the Building Schools for the Future initiative.
The multi-billion pound scheme was scrapped in July but Mr Balls said: "Our children are worth it."
He continued: "Because of Michael Gove's short-sighted and arbitrary and unfair decision to scrap the Building Schools for the Future programme, over 700,000 children in 700 schools up and down our country will now not be getting the new school building they were promised."
Mr Balls pointed out that Labour transformed hundreds of under-performing schools while in power.
