Schools set for national Olympic-style competition
October 06 2010
Graduates looking for teaching jobs in Britain may be interested to hear about a new government sports initiative is to be piloted in a number of schools up and down the country.
Teachers in London, Greater Manchester, Lincolnshire, Kent, Hertfordshire, the Black Country, North Yorkshire and Tyne and Wear will be the first to roll out the new Olympic and Paralympic-style sports competition.
The initiative - pioneered by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport - will see pupils battle it out within their own schools and against others in a wide range of sports, with the competition culminating in a national event in 2012 at London's Olympic Park.
Member of parliament Jeremy Hunt said: "Win or lose, competitive sport teaches children important life lessons - in commitment, discipline and teamwork. Our new Olympic-styled school sports competition will spark a revolution in school sport, and leave a lasting legacy from London’s Games."
Elsewhere in British education, an independent review is set to look at improving the access young people have to musical instruments to ensure music benefits more students across the country.
