Students 'need financial help and advice'

It is important that school leavers receive adequate financial advice and guidance, it has been claimed.

Dr Tessa Stone, chief executive at BrightsideUNIAID, said that with university fees likely to increase in future, it is vital that young people are fully aware of the help they are entitled to.

She noted that it is difficult to say whether the rising cost of higher education is fair.

"If the degree that you get makes an absolute fundamental difference to what you go on to do, then you got a good deal. If you choose a course that isn't really recognised, that doesn't give you useful skills and it costs you a fortune then no, it's not fair," Dr Stone commented.

It is important that people are able to make a well-judged decision on whether to enter higher education, she added.

A review published today (October 12th) by Lord Browne recommended that the government lift the current tuition fee cap.
