Parents 'don't rate sport highly enough'

Many parents do not place enough emphasis on the importance of sport, it has been suggested.

David Mbaziira, head of marketing and communications at Sporting Equals, said that although there are definite transferable skills between sport and academic work, parents tend to view other subjects as more important.

"There are possible conflicts around time priorities with study and commitment to sport, particularly at the competitive level. We have found this to be a recurring issue even in instances where individuals have gone on to achieve at elite level," he commented.

Mr Mbaziira added that many youngsters living in deprived areas do not view sport as a viable career option or something they can pursue because of the high support costs involved.

It was announced earlier this month that funding for previous Labour administration's PE and Sports Strategy is to be scrapped.

The £162 million was used to help schools offer pupils competitive sporting activities.
