Scottish school-leavers 'heading in right direction'

The majority of Scottish school-leavers go to "positive destinations" when leave, it has been revealed.

Government figures published today (December 1st) show that 86.8 per cent of young people who left school last year are in higher education, further education, employment, voluntary work or training.

The proportion of school-leavers entering further and higher education has risen from 56 per cent to 62.8 per cent over the last three years.

In addition, the number who are unemployed or seeking training has decreased slightly from 11.5 per cent to 11.3 per cent.

However, the figures revealed that vulnerable school-leavers from deprived areas continue to be less likely to enter positive destinations.

In related news, Scottish education secretary Michael Russell said that although some tough decisions need to be made regarding spending, teaching jobs and places will be protected.

He added that the government remains committed to giving every child the best start in life.
