University tuition fees will be affordable, promises Willetts

Universities minister David Willetts has promised that higher tuition fees will still be affordable for students.

Writing for the Guardian, the politician argued that the government is committed to the idea that those who are able should have the opportunity to attend university, regardless of their background.

"My biggest concern is that young people currently at school or college do not appreciate how the system will actually work. During the first student demonstrations in London, for instance, one teenager said in an interview that higher contributions would make it impossible for her to fulfil her ambition to become a teacher," Mr Willetts explained.

He claimed that this is simply not the case, adding that he does not want any young person to be put off applying for university because of a misunderstanding.

MPs are expected to vote on tuition fee rises on Thursday (December 9th), with the National Union of Students planning to lobby politicians that day.
