Bolton primary pupils uncover the past

Pupils at Plodder Lane Primary School in Bolton have been uncovering their school's past as part of a government-backed history project.

Children have stepped out of the classroom and turned detective to interview past pupils and study old records and photographs, the Bolton News reports.

The school is being supported by a local historian, film-maker and drama specialist.

"There have been 10,000 pupils who have attended this school since it opened in 1904. It has an interesting past and it is about the children learning about the area they live in and preserving the history of it," said Sharif Patel, the school's history co-ordinator.

The project is about showing children how to learn in a different way and using resources such as old logbooks, he added.

Speaking earlier this year, the Better History Group suggested that the subject has been neglected in recent years and allowed to go into decline.
