York Council outlines planned changes to music lessons in the city

A number of music teaching jobs could be cut in the city of York as local councillors look to reduce spending, it has been reported.

Under the current system, pupils are able to benefit from one-on-one tuition provided by a dedicated team of 25 specialist music professionals, most of whom work in part-time teaching jobs in primaries and secondaries in the city.

However, according to a new report from the York Press, with the city council keen to reduce spending, this system could soon be changed, with pupils instead being taught in groups by a smaller number of specialist professionals.

Outlining the plans, a spokeswoman for the local authority explained that such a move would enable a further 3,000 pupils a year to benefit from music lessons while simultaneously helping the council balance its books.

"The new model proposes an approved tutors scheme, which will enable well-trained and quality-checked freelance teachers to offer their teaching services directly to pupils and parents," she said.

This comes as the Telegraph has reported that the Musicians' Union has advised professionals working in professional music teaching jobs in England against touching their pupils in lessons.
