Sheffield schools improving as top talent given toughest jobs

Installing top talent into some of the toughest teaching jobs in Sheffield is helping to raise educational standards in the city, it has been claimed.

Following on from the 'satisfactory' rating given to its schools last year, Sheffield City Council is now celebrating after Ofsted inspectors reported that standards have improved markedly over the past 12 months.

Indeed, the government inspection body has opted to upgrade its rating of schools in the south Yorkshire city to 'good', with the council's cabinet member for children and young people's services, Colin Ross, putting this upturn in fortunes down to the ongoing policy of placing the best professionals in the toughest teaching jobs.

Speaking to the South Yorkshire Star, he said: "We have invested heavily in raising attainment and aspiration levels across the city as every child's education matters to us."

At the same time, the Basingstoke Gazette has reported that staff and the parents of pupils at the South View Infant School in the town are calling for an apology from the Ofsted team who branded it 'inadequate' following a recent inspection.
