Concern that RE will be 'marginalised' with English Baccalaureate

The Catholic Education Service has expressed concern that religious education could be marginalised when the government introduces its English Baccalaureate.

Students will be awarded this extra certificate if they achieve A*-C grades in English, science, maths, a modern language and one humanities subject.

However, it has been revealed that religion is not likely to be incorporated into this.

Father Tim Gardner, a religious education advisor at the Catholic Education Service, said he is "very surprised and concerned" by this.

"RE itself is a broad-based humanity, demanding knowledge and skills in history, textual criticism, anthropology, ethics, philosophy and theology," he explained.

Education secretary Michael Gove said earlier this year that GCSE students taking exams in core areas deserve to be given special recognition.

He added that students who do not understand science or other cultures are deliberately being cut off from "the best that is going on in our world".ADNFCR-1566-ID-800292064-ADNFCR
