New school closure guidance published in Wales

The Welsh government has published new guidance for schools affected by bad weather.

Education minister Leighton Andrews said parents and ministers are concerned about the number of school days children are missing due to snow and ice.

The guidance will be sent to all schools and contains a risk assessment, as well as suggestions on how headteachers can tackle the issues they may be facing.

"We are committed to providing schools with guidance for extreme weather, so pupils can receive the maximum amount of teaching. Our guidelines emphasise what actions head teachers can take to keep the school open. We want to give them the support to confidently make the best decision for the school," Mr Andrews commented.

The government advised schools to consider distance learning if they are forced to close.

Approximately half of Welsh schools were forced to shut their doors last winter due to adverse weather conditions.
