Welsh schoolchildren urged to read small amount each day
December 16 2010
The cast of the Wizard of Oz, which is currently being staged in Aberystwyth took time out from performing this week to encourage schoolchildren to read more.
Dorothy, the Scarecrow, Tin Man and Lion posed for pictures with local children to highlight the importance of reading regularly and support the government's National Literacy Plan.
Education secretary Leighton Andrews said the government wants youngsters to develop a love of reading, particularly boys who are sometimes reluctant readers.
He noted that sitting down with a book for just ten minutes each day can make a huge difference to pupils.
"Books are now competing with the latest computer games and TV shows, which can make reading seem like a less exciting alternative. We want to show children that reading can be fun and doesn't just have to involve books – reading comics, magazines and websites make a difference too," Mr Andrews added.
The Welsh Assembly Government earlier this year launched a Welsh medium reading scheme aimed at male pupils.
