Teaching in Scotland: class sizes limited to 25
September 23 2009
Moves to introduce a limit on class sizes for those teaching in Scotland at primary level have been confirmed by the Scottish National Party.
A cap of 25 pupils per primary class will be introduced, Scottish education secretary Fiona Hyslop said. This limit is higher than the Scottish National Party had pledged in its manifesto, when it suggested class sizes at primary school would be limited to 18.
Ms Hyslop told the BBC's Good Morning Scotland radio programme that resources have been provided to allow local authorities to make continued progress in allowing the development of smaller class sizes.
A number of factors are behind the move, Ms Hyslop said. She noted that the continued financial pressures as a result of the ongoing economic downturn have affected spending.
Opposition parties have criticised the move by the Scottish National Party, arguing that they party has failed to deliver on its promises.
