British education system 'should follow lead of Far East'

The UK can learn a great deal from the education systems in countries such as China and Singapore, it has been claimed.

Writing for the Daily Telegraph, education secretary Michael Gove said schools in the Far East are turning out pupils that are at an "altogether higher level" than our own.

"The latest international education league tables showed us slipping further and further behind, thanks to Labour's neglect of standards. And at the same time, the gap between rich and poor grows wider, while places like Shanghai and Singapore put us to shame," he commented.

Mr Gove said the coalition is accelerating its pace of reform in education because it cannot "waste time" and allow British pupils to fall behind.

He added that the government is "giving new teeth" to exam watchdog Ofqual in order to raise standards.

A recent study by the e-Learning Foundation found that more than a million British children still do not have access to a computer in their home.
