Classic is most popular book for Scottish schoolchildren
December 31 2010
Oor Wullie has been named as Scotland's most popular children's book.
According to bookseller Waterstone's, the classic book beat off competition from the likes of the Twilight Saga by Stephanie Meyer.
Scottish education secretary Michael Russell said reading from a young age is "crucial" and can leave memories that last a lifetime.
"The Hill of the Red Fox by Allan Campbell MacLean is a book I have never forgotten. As a child it entertained, thrilled and even frightened me and I know it awoke in me a love of reading that has never stopped," he commented.
"I still read for pleasure and leisure every day, no matter the hours I have to work. It is also a book I give to children whenever I can."
Consumer group Which? revealed earlier this month that educational toys have proved popular with Scottish schoolchildren this Christmas, with e-book readers selling well.
