New scholarship launched for children of servicemen and women

A new scholarship has been launched for the children of British troops killed on duty.

The fund will be used to help people who want to enter further education and university.

Announcing the initiative, universities minister David Willetts said: "It is surely right that we go out of our way to support the families of those brave servicemen and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice to keep the nation safe.

"The scholarships scheme will ensure that children who have lost a parent on active duty are not disadvantaged if they decide to study at university."

Minister for defence personnel and veterans Andrew Robathan said the scheme will show the families of servicemen and women that they have the "enduring gratitude" of the British people.

The government announced earlier this year that the cap on university tuition fees will be raised, with some students set to pay £9,000 a year from 2012.
