Over ten per cent of schools now academies

More than one in ten secondary schools are now academies, government figures have revealed.

According to the Department for Education, there are now 407 academies open in England.

Since September 2010, 204 academies have opened their doors, with 46 due to open this week alone.

A further 254 schools are currently going through the application process.

Commenting on the figures, education secretary Michael Gove said: "I am delighted that more schools are opening as academies this week, and are now free from central and local bureaucratic control.

"Schools are taking up our offer to become academies because they recognise the huge benefits of being an academy – more autonomy, more power to teachers, and an opportunity to thrive, free from interference from government."

In other news, the coalition's policy relating to free schools was criticised earlier this week, with the National Union of Teachers claiming they are not wanted or needed.
