Head urges parents to register for free school meals

Parents at one school in London are being urged to register for free school meals if their children are eligible.

Dr Christine Carpenter, the principal at Sacred Heart High School in Hammersmith, has written to parents asking them to apply if they are eligible as the school may be able to gain extra funding under the pupil premium scheme, the Guardian reports.

"It is more likely than not that many families who could claim free school meals have chosen not to ...[but] whatever the reason, I urge you to apply for free school meals anyway ... if we can increase the numbers eligible for free school meals to 35 per cent, then the school will receive approximately £123,560, which will go some way to reducing the likely deficit we will otherwise experience," she said.

Dr Carpenter said that she too was entitled to free school meals as a child and does not believe this has made her any less successful or socially adept.

It was revealed in December that £625 million has been made available under the pupil premium scheme over the next year.
