Somerset pupils spend night in playground

Primary pupils at one school in Somerset stepped outside the classroom this week to enjoy an evening of stargazing in the playground.

As part of a special event organised by teacher David Young, children at Shoscombe Primary School saw their hall transformed into a planetarium and four large telescopes erected in the playground, the Somerset Guardian reports.

"I wanted to try to broaden the teaching for the project and take it outside the sterile environment of the classroom. The children had a fantastic time," Mr Young commented.

Andy Burns, an astrologer from the Wiltshire Astronomical Society, was on hand to show pupils the surface of the moon and Jupiter, while Tim O'Brien of the Jordell Bank Observatory took part in a live web-chat with them.

In other Somerset education news, it was revealed earlier this month that Wyvern Community School is to be given £14 million to revamp its facilities before it converts to academy status in May.
