Bolton youngsters 'make a year's worth of maths progress in 12 weeks'

Pupils at one Bolton primary school have been finding out that maths can be fun.

The youngsters from Blackrod Church School have been taking part in an Every Child Counts scheme created by Edge Hill University, which aims to help children develop a love for the subject.

According to the Bolton News, pupils have made 12 months' worth of progress in just 12 weeks.

Teacher Chris Jackson, who attended a specialist training programme at the university and has been providing pupils with one-to-one tuition, said she is very proud of the children who took part.

"We find out what they can do through testing," she explained.

"Sometimes we look at the language and change the language; for example, 'multiplication' can be 'lots of times' or 'groups of'.

"'Subtraction' can become 'leaving' or 'less', so they understand what the concept means. If they don't understand it then they won't be able to do it."

In related news, gifted youngsters from across Bolton recently took part in the Shine: Serious Fun on Saturdays project, which involved taking part in extra weekend classes at Bolton School.
