Balfour Beatty wins West Sussex academies deal

Construction firm Balfour Beatty has been identified as the preferred bidder for a contract to develop new educational facilities in West Sussex under the National Academies framework.

Under the terms of the contract, Balfour would be charged with building and redeveloping four academies in Littlehampton, Lancing, Shoreham, and Midhurst Rother.

The contract is valued at £120 million and Balfour was selected as the preferred bidder on the strength of the sample Sir Robert Woodard Academy at Lancing, which will provide a co-educational facility for 1,400 pupils in the area.

Earlier this month, the Department for Children, Schools and Families revealed that the number of primary schoolchildren being educated in academies is set to increase as a number of new facilities open their doors this term.

The department reached its target for the inauguration of 200 new academies a full year ahead of schedule, with 67 new facilities opening their doors this term after completing recruitment drives to attract teachers in England.
