Special needs pupils to learn in mainstream schools

Pupils with behavioural and emotional difficulties could learn in centres that are part of mainstream schools instead of specialist centres, if council plans get the green light.

The Yorkshire Post has reported that Doncaster Council is trying to push through plans that will reduce the number of pupils that are excluded by implementing a no-exclusion policy on schools.

Under the plans any student that is excluded will only be removed for a short period but will be brought back into conventional schooling as soon as possible.

Doncaster Council's cabinet member for children's services, Andrea Milner, told the Yorkshire Post : "We are committed to developing a set of new services to provide better and more inclusive arrangements for these pupils that will ultimately lead to improved educational and social outcomes.

A public consultation is currently underway and will run until mid-April, but it is hoped that if given the go ahead the changes will be rolled out as early as June.

A number of schools have reported an increase in the number of exclusions across both primary and secondary schools, with Wigan schools excluding more than 2500 pupils between 2008 and 2009.
