More young people involved in learning in Wales

More young people in Wales are choosing to engage in education, employment or training, the Western Mail reports.

Last year the number of 16-18 year olds that were not in education, employment or training (Neet) stood at 11.3 per cent down from 12.9 per cent in 2009, a study by the Assembly Government revealed.

Despite the reduction the government faced criticism for falling short of the seven per cent target outlined in the in The Learning Country: Vision Into Action plan, published in 2006.

However, a spokesman for the Assembly Government said that £49m of funding had been earmarked for a support package for young people.

"This funding has paid for more training and education places, provided extra funding for further education as well as funding the continuation of the Pathways to Apprenticeships and the Young Recruits Programme," he told the Western Mail.

Figures released by the Office for National Statistics show that one in five 16 to 24-year-olds in the UK are now out of work.
