School curriculum review 'not necessary'

School curriculum review 'not necessary'

The government's planned national curriculum review has been branded as not necessary by one headteacher.

Speaking to Journal Live, David Pearmain of Kenton school in Newcastle said teachers "simply don't need another review".

"When Mr Gove became education secretary he said he wanted to give teachers and headteachers more freedom to decide how schools were run; and I'd hoped he was telling the truth," he told the publication.

"With this review, however, we could end up with a national curriculum that is even more controlled and centralised than before."

Furthermore, Mr Pearmain claimed the minister has made inaccurate comments regarding the current curriculum.

"He claims children are only taught about two names in history - Hitler and Henry VIII - which certainly isn't true," he added.

It was announced earlier this week that the review will consider which subjects should be made compulsory and at what age, and how the current "sub-standard" curriculum can be replaced.
