Number of unemployed teachers falls in Scotland

The number of teachers claiming Job Seeker's Allowance (JSA) has fallen in Scotland.

Figures published by the government show that 320 teaching professionals claimed JSA in December 2010, compared to335 in December 2009.

Commenting on the statistics, education secretary Michael Russell said: "These figures again show that we are making real inroads in to teacher unemployment and that Scotland is far ahead of the rest of the UK in tackling this issue.

"A fourth consecutive drop in the year-on-year claimant figure also shows sustained progress and demonstrates that the Scottish government's action in this area, such as reducing student teacher intakes, is taking effect."

He added that the government "aims to do more" to protect teacher numbers and prevent long term teacher unemployment.

A review into teaching published earlier this week in Scotland recommended that students applying for teacher training courses be forced to complete literacy and numeracy tests.
