Six-week holidays 'should be scrapped'

Plaid Cymru is calling for six-week holidays to be scrapped and spread throughout the year instead.

The party said this would mean parents are no longer tempted to take their children out of school in term time in order to secure cheaper deals.

Nerys Evans, the party's education spokesperson, said there is a "strong case" to be made that the current holiday system is not as effective as it could be.

"The way we teach our children has remained constant even though our nation has changed," she said.

"The term structure as it is now is based upon allowing children to help on the farm and harvesting during summer.

"Continuing with it in its present form simply does not take into consideration the challenges of a modern Wales."

In other Welsh education news, Leighton Andrews, the country's education minister, announced that the Welsh baccalaureate qualification is to be extended and rolled out to a further 53 centres across the country.
