Employers 'recruiting bright pupils from school'

An increasing number of top employers are recruiting pupils straight from school, due to concerns that bright young people are being put off university.

A study carried out by the Association of Graduate Recruiters (AGR) found that a quarter of organisations now employ people in this way.

Furthermore, it was revealed that a fifth of companies are considering launching a recruitment scheme for students of school and college age.

The survey also revealed that graduate unemployment is likely to ease over the coming year.

Experts predict that vacancies for university leavers will increase by 3.8 per cent in 2011.

AGR chief executive Carl Gilleard commented: "What tended to happen in the past [recessions] is that employers put the brakes on, and only took their foot off a year or two later. Then they found they didn't have the talent in their organisation to cope with growth. I think that was an important lesson that a lot of employers learned."

Speaking recently, Dan Hawes of the Graduate Recruitment Bureau said graduates must stand out in order to secure a job and consider completing work experience placements while at university.
