Government's education plans 'may not suit everyone'
January 26 2011
The government's plan to focus on traditional academic subjects may work well for some, but it is not for everyone.
This is the opinion of former education secretary Estelle Morris, who said she suspects that ministers are "trying to replicate their own education experiences".
In an article for the Guardian, she commented: "If you follow the debates on the future of the school sports partnerships, their views on 'soft' A-level subjects, their plans for the future content of league tables, what might happen to assessment, and, most of all, the English baccalaureate, a picture begins to emerge.
"Team games are the only sort of sport that matters; traditional subjects are better than new areas of study; assessment should always be at the end of the course; vocational subjects matter less than academic ones."
Ms Morris urged the government not to be blind to the alternatives and pointed out that there has been little mention of religious education or vocational subjects.
Speaking to the same newspaper last week, the Right Rev John Pritchard said religion should have formed part of the new English baccalaureate qualification.
