Schools 'could pay for own crossing patrols'
January 27 2011
Schools could be forced to pay for their own road crossing patrols if local authorities cut these services from their highways budget.
The Huddersfield Daily Examiner reported that Calderdale Council is currently considering this option, in a move that could see schools in the area making their own arrangements.
Brighthouse councillor Colin Stout said the local authority wants to wants to transfer the responsibility for school crossing patrols "from highways to education".
"Some schools could ask teachers to run the service before and after school, others could ask for volunteers which is what the idea of the big society is all about," he told the news provider.
However, he pointed out that children's safety could be put at risk if a volunteer fails to turn up.
"Even if there does have to be changes it is crucial we get this right and we need safeguards in place to ensure safety is guaranteed for the children going to and from school on such busy roads," Mr Stout added.
In related news, the Dorset Echo reported earlier this week that a local campaign and petition have been set up in a bid to save local school patrols.
