Teaching in the UK: Pupils prefer science

School pupils have voted science to be their favourite subject, a report has revealed.

In news that may be of interest to those teaching in England, a survey of some 2,000 pupils aged between five and 18 found that science was the most favoured subject, ahead of PE, English and maths, the Times reports.

According to the newspaper, some two-thirds of pupils surveyed said that they enjoyed science lessons, while just 2.5 per cent of respondents believed the subject was uncool and for geeks.

More than half said they would be interested in studying the subject to A level or beyond, the newspaper adds.

Children did, however, believe that science teaching should be more relevant to real life, and that there should be more chances to do experiments.

In related news, this week witnessed the opening of a new science centre by the Royal Institution. The centre is designed to complement learning on the science curriculum.
