Scottish council approves ?812m school building programme

South Lanarkshire Council has said that an £812 million school building programme will go ahead, despite the tough economic climate.

The decision means that 124 local primary schools will be rebuilt or refurbished, the Evening Times reports.

There were concerns that the programme would have to be put on hold after the council was ordered to make savings.

Council leader Eddie McAvoy told the publication: "The fact all of our primaries will be rebuilt or refurbished over the next few years – despite the tough financial climate – is testament to the importance we place on our young people.

"The buildings will inspire children and young adults to learn and will give teachers the very best modern surroundings in which to teach."

He added that the "first class" sporting facilities at these schools will also benefit the wider community.

Elsewhere, the Birmingham Mail reported this week that more than 1,700 extra class places are to be created in the city, with expansions taking place at eight primary schools.
