Sixth forms 'need to take collaborative approach'
February 02 2011
Sixth form colleges may find it necessary to take a more collaborative approach in the future, it has been claimed.
Tim Davies, headteacher at Addington High School in Croydon, in an interview with the Croydon Advertiser that 26 of his pupils also attend classes at nearby Tenison's High School.
"I think we are a good example of how the collaborative approach can work. My view is that very few schools will be able to run a traditional sixth form, both in terms of cost and the demand for different types of course," he told the news provider.
"Sharing resources and expertise allows us to have sixth form students, which is what our governors have been striving for. So far it has been a real joy."
He added that local authorities need to pull together to save money and provide young people with as much choice as possible.
In related news, Lesley Donoghue, principal at Reading College, suggested earlier this week that the government's decision to scrap Education Maintenance Allowance payments will lead to fewer people studying at sixth form colleges.
Speaking to Get Reading she said it is a short-sighted move by the government.
