Financial education 'should not be compulsory'

Financial education 'should not be compulsory'

Financial education should not form part of the national curriculum, it has been claimed.

Nick Seaton, chairman of the Campaign for Real Education, said that although learning about money matters is important, this type of "social education" should be left to parents.

"The trouble with the school curriculum is that there is so much being pushed into it. The more that's pushed in, the less time there is for the important things like the primary job of schools which is to teach history, geography, English, maths, science and foreign languages and so on," he commented.

If standards are going to be raised then schools need to focus on their "primary purpose", which is to focus on core academic subjects, Mr Seaton suggested.

A major campaign for compulsory financial education was launched earlier this week by the All Party Parliamentary Group on Financial Education for Young People, with more than 120 MPs involved.
