New curriculum 'should cater for all'

New curriculum 'should cater for all'

The government has been warned that a curriculum focusing too much on academic subjects could lead to problems in the classroom.

A report published this week by the Commons education select committee said a curriculum that is poorly differentiated for pupils with different strengths will not hold children's attention and lead to misbehaviour.

"If the curriculum doesn't stimulate children, they will switch off, and the chances are that they will disrupt other children's learning. The onus is now on the government to draw up a national curriculum which engages all children and meets their aspirations: then let teachers decide how to apply it," said committee chairman Graham Stuart.

The report recommends that the future curriculum contains a mix of academic and vocational subjects.

Education secretary Michael Gove announced a major curriculum review last month, with the coalition planning to replace the current curriculum with a "world-class resource" for teachers and children.
