Academies 'will lead to two-tier education system'

Academies 'will lead to two-tier education system'

Creating more academies will lead to a two-tier education system, it has been suggested.

Alasdair Smith, National Secretary of the Anti Academies Alliance, said the government's desire to expand this programme will cause social segregation.

"The whole point of academies is to break up the system of national pay and conditions. There are many problems with academies. Ultimately, what we'll see is a system of social segregation," he commented.

"It will lead to a system where there is a greater hierarchy of schools. Where there is a hierarchy of schools there is greater social segregation - the middle classes tend to get into the better schools and that means the poorer children will do worse."

Mr Smith claimed the UK should have a fully comprehensive system where there are good quality schools available for everyone.

Meanwhile, it was revealed earlier this week that governors at Exmouth Community College in Devon are currently consulting over whether to convert to academy status.

Staff and parents are being invited to give their opinions over the coming weeks.
