Devon pupils spend day in Victorian kitchen

Children from one Devon primary school swapped their classroom for a day in a Victorian kitchen this week.

Pupils from Homelands Primary School in Torquay wore traditional Victorian clothing when they visited Powderham Castle to get a taste of the past, the South Devon Journal reports.

"They had to bake, clean or beat rugs. It gave them a real life experience of what it was like in Victorian times," year 2 teacher Sherre Leins told the newspaper.

The castle's Victorian kitchen was restored five years ago and more than 3,000 youngsters have visited since then.

"We are delighted that our Victorian learning programme is such a success and proving to be a fantastic learning resource for schools wishing to supplement the children's learning outside of the classroom," said Simon Fishwick, estate director at Powderham Castle.

"We have had 90 groups take part to date with another nine booked in over the coming months so we hope to hit 100 before Easter."

Elsewhere, children from Springhead Primary in Staffordshire also experienced life in Victorian Britain recently, trading their uniforms for old-fashioned clothing and using slates instead of paper and pens.
