Geography lessons 'not good enough'

Geography lessons in many English schools are not up to scratch, a new Ofsted report has revealed.

Inspectors found that the subject has all but disappeared in one in ten primary schools across the country.

"Developing a deeper understanding of people and places, and of the need to live in
balance with an increasingly fragile environment, is more important than ever in
today's world," the report stated.

"Thus, in schools where geography was weak, as was sometimes the
case in primary schools and at Key Stage 3, pupils were denied crucial elements of a
broad and balanced education for life."

Ofsted revealed that in 2009, 137 secondary schools failed to enter a single candidate for GCSE geography - up from 97 in 2007.

Meanwhile, a report published by the body last month concluded that there are "significant barriers" to language learning in secondary schools, with pupils not given the opportunity to practice enough.
