More bilingual champions for Welsh colleges

More than £700,000 of grant funding has been made available to extend the Welsh government's bilingual champion grant to four more colleges.

This money will enable the colleges to employ a member of staff who will promote Welsh-medium learning and improve bilingual provisions for learners.

Education minister Leighton Andrews said the government made a commitment through the One Wales agreement to develop and strengthen Welsh-medium education.

He noted that extending the scheme will give students more choice over how they learn.

"With the Welsh language acquiring an increasingly significant presence in the work place, I am pleased that the bilingual champion scheme has been extended to support and encourage even more Welsh-speakers and learners to develop their Welsh language skills for the future," Mr Andrews added.

Meanwhile, it was announced last month that the Welsh baccalaureate qualification is to be extended and made available to an additional 7,500 students across the country.
