Scottish schoolchildren head to CERN

A group of Scottish pupils left their school behind this week to take a tour around the CERN (European Organisation for Nuclear Research) headquarters in Geneva.

The students were joined by education secretary Michael Russell and Scotland's chief scientific advisor Anne Glover, as well as their teachers.

"Science is central to Scotland's future economic growth. It is therefore essential that our young people are supported and encouraged to take up career opportunities in science and helped to achieve their full potential in this important subject, at school and beyond," Mr Russell commented.

"This visit is part of a range of activity to support those efforts and was designed to give a small group of teachers and pupils an opportunity to see groundbreaking scientific research in action."

Pupils used the Scottish school intranet system Glow to share their experiences with their classmates back home.

The government launched an action plan last year to increase the focus on science and engineering in Scottish education.
