School wins grant for nature zone

Pupils at one York school will soon have their own butterfly garden and bog marsh.

Sand Hutton Church of England School has been awarded an £8,000 lottery grant to transform part of its grounds into an outdoor learning zone, the York Press reports.

The area will also feature a shelter where pupils can work and a nature trail.

Headteacher Janet Wardell said the outdoor learning area can be used to teach pupils about the fragility of nature and wildlife.

"Our school is set in lovely grounds, so we are taking advantage of them to the benefit of the children because the projects they will be able to pursue will cover so many parts of the school curriculum, especially science," she told the publication.

In related news, the Manchester Evening News reported this week that children from Corpus Christi Primary School in Chadderton have begun growing their own vegetables.
